The Issue

There are many who allow it in their home who would never think of looking at a pornographic website. There are many who allow it in their home who would never think of bringing a "dirty movie" into their home. There are many who allow it in their home who would never think of subscribing to one of the X-rated magazines. The "it" is the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. It is one of the most anticipated annual issues of any publication in America. It has become so accepted in culture that it has grown into the modern vernacular. A trip to the local drug store reminded me it was the time of year for it to be out. There were racks of it everywhere. Just the cover was enough to make me blush. So what ISSUES should the Christian have with the issue?

If erotic literature such as 50 Shades of Grey can be labeled as "mommy porn," certainly the SI Swimsuit Issue can be labeled "daddy porn." The ISSUE is that such is vulgar! It is acceptable and justifiable by many otherwise wholesome folks because it hides behind the Sports Illustrated name. "It is only one issue a year, so it's not that bad, right?" "I just subscribe to SI for the sports, so I cannot control getting that issue" (actually you can call SI and opt out of the Swimsuit Issue).

The truth is, we have no business with a Swimsuit Issue. The ISSUE is publications like the Swimsuit Issue, lingerie catalogs, and the such like have the same problems as do any other smutty magazine. The same Biblical ISSUES apply.

Matthew 5:28 says to look and lust is to commit adultery in their heart. It is sin.

Colossians 3:5 says we are to put to death things like "sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire."

Psalm 119:137 says we should not look at worthless things.

Proverbs 4:23 Says we are to guard our hearts.

Beyond all of this, have we forgotten ISSUES like influence and example? What kind of lessons do we teach our sons about the value of women? What does it teach our daughters about what kind of women they should grow up to be? What does it tell our wives about our love, respect, and desire for them?

Just because the world accepts it, does not mean we should. Like Job, we should make a covenant with our eyes to not allow any smutty materials into our lives, into our homes, nor into our eyes. There are too many Biblical ISSUES that teach against such!
